Tragic Accident on Blandford Road Highlights Dangerous Road Conditions in Northriding

The Northriding community is in shock after a tragic accident on Blandford Road claimed the life of a motorcyclist. A delivery motorcyclist was struck by an approaching car. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

This heartbreaking accident underscores the dire state of our roads. Blanford Road, like many others in our suburb, is plagued by potholes, poor drainage, and general neglect by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). Time and time again, residents have raised concerns about deteriorating road conditions, yet little to no action has been taken. Now, this inaction has cost someone their life.

While the JRA bears significant responsibility for failing to maintain our roads, we must also acknowledge the reckless behaviour of some road users. Delivery motorcyclists frequently flout traffic laws, weaving between cars, ignoring signals, and taking unnecessary risks. This is not to shift blame for this specific incident, but rather to highlight a broader issue that cannot be ignored. All road users—whether motorists, bikers, or pedestrians—must act responsibly to ensure safety for everyone.

The Northriding Residents Association (NRA) and our ward councillor were on the scene and are taking this matter seriously. Representation will be made to the relevant departments to demand urgent action. The continued neglect of our infrastructure is unacceptable, and we cannot allow our suburb to deteriorate further without holding those responsible to account.

This tragic loss must serve as a wake-up call. We need immediate road repairs, proper drainage maintenance, and better enforcement of traffic laws. The NRA will not stand idly by while lives are lost due to incompetence and neglect. We urge all residents to report potholes and unsafe road conditions and to join us in demanding action from the authorities.

The time for excuses is over. The time for accountability is now.
