LPG Safety Tips for Northriding Residents
As winter approaches, many households in Northriding will rely on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for heating and cooking. While LPG is a convenient and efficient energy source, safety must always come first. To help you stay safe, we’ve compiled essential tips from industry experts, including the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association of South Africa (LPGSA) and the SAQCC Gas.
1. Safe Handling of LPG Cylinders
Refilling Your Cylinder
- Always ensure your cylinder is legally filled. Check for a shrink wrap seal covering the valve.
- Do NOT accept the cylinder if:
- There is no seal.
- The seal is clear (no branding or writing).
- The seal only says “LPG” or “LPGas” without matching the cylinder’s branding.
Connecting Your Cylinder
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Ensure the cylinder valve is closed before attaching the regulator.
- Check the rubber seal (bullnose/O-ring) on the regulator for damage—cracks or brittleness can cause leaks.
- Remember: Regulators have a left-hand thread. Turn anti-clockwise to connect and clockwise to remove.
Checking for Leaks
- After connecting, open the valve 1.5 turns only.
- Wait 30 seconds and smell for gas. If detected, close the valve immediately.
- Apply a soapy water solution to joints—bubbles indicate a leak.
2. Safe Use of LPG Appliances
Permitted Appliances
- Never install or use an unpermitted appliance.
- Check if your appliance is approved via the SAQCC Gas database.
- If you suspect an appliance is unpermitted, return it to the seller or report it to LPGSA Compliance (compliance@lpgas.co.za).
What to Do If You Smell Gas
- Close the valve and take the cylinder outdoors.
- Ventilate the area—avoid sparks or flames.
- Check for leaks using soapy water.
In Case of an LPG Fire
- Close the valve if safe to do so.
- Call emergency services (fire brigade).
- Keep adjacent cylinders cool with water (but do NOT spray the fire directly).
- Do NOT attempt to extinguish the fire yourself—evacuate and wait for professionals.
3. Hiring Qualified Installers
Why You Need a Registered Installer
- All LPG installations require a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Never attempt DIY installations—only SAQCC Gas-registered installers are authorized.
How to Verify an Installer’s Credentials
- Ask for their installer card and check their registration number on the SAQCC Gas website.
- After installation, ensure you receive a digital CoC (Certificate of Conformity).
Reporting Non-Compliant Work
If an installation is unsafe or non-compliant, report it to:
📧 LPGSA Compliance: compliance@lpgas.co.za
