Halloween, Diwali, Guy Fawkes, Christmas and New Year A Message for Northriding Resident’s as well as Pet Owners·

As the festive season approaches with Diwali, Halloween, and Guy Fawkes, it’s an exciting time filled with joy, lights, and celebrations. However, it’s also important to remain considerate of our pets and neighbors who may be impacted by the noise and fireworks that accompany these events.

Fireworks Bylaws in the City of Johannesburg

In the City of Johannesburg, fireworks are permitted between 7 PM and 10 PM, which covers major celebrations including:

  • Halloween (Friday, 31 October 2025)
  • Diwali (Monday, 20 October 2025 {this is a five-day celebration traditionally, so some may celebrate on different days})
  • Guy Fawkes (Wednesday, 5 November 2024)
  • Christmas Eve (Wednesday, 24 December 2025)
  • Christmas day (Thursday, 25 December 2025)
  • New Years Eve (Wednesday, 31 December 2025)
  • New Years Day (Thursday, 01 January 2026)

Fireworks, while festive, can be distressing for pets. The loud noises and bright flashes may cause animals to panic, leading them to run away or experience stress-induced health issues.

Therefore, it’s essential to plan ahead for your pets’ well-being during this period.

Tips to Keep Your Pets Calm and Safe:

  1. Set Up a Calm Environment: Create a quiet, enclosed space where your pets can feel safe. This should be away from windows and doors to reduce exposure to fireworks noise and flashes.
  2. Use Quieter Fireworks: If you plan to set off fireworks, please opt for those that don’t produce loud bangs. The loud, sudden noises are what most distress animals, so quieter alternatives can help keep pets safe and calm in your neighbourhood.
  3. Consult Your Vet: If your pet is particularly sensitive to loud noises, speak to your vet about calming medications or natural remedies to help them relax during the fireworks period.
  4. Distractions Help: Playing soothing music or white noise can help mask the sound of fireworks. Keeping your pet entertained with toys or treats can also help divert their attention.
  5. Keep Pets Indoors: On nights when fireworks are expected, it’s best to keep your pets indoors, even if they’re accustomed to being outside. This helps prevent them from getting spooked and running away.
  6. Ensure Proper Identification: Double-check that your pet’s ID tags and microchip details are current. Should they get out, this will help reunite them with you faster.

Respecting Cultural Celebrations and Constitutional Rights

In addition to being mindful of pets, it’s equally important to respect the constitutional rights of all community members. Diwali is a significant religious festival for Hindus, and it is their right to celebrate and observe it. While fireworks are an integral part of Diwali, we ask that all residents be respectful and considerate during this time.

By staying mindful of each other’s needs and ensuring that celebrations are conducted within the 7 PM to 10 PM fireworks window, we can create a harmonious balance that respects both cultural traditions and the well-being of our pets and neighbours.

Let’s work together to enjoy the festive season while ensuring safety and consideration for everyone—human and animal alike.
