As we prepare to say farewell to the year past and welcome the New Year ahead, New Year’s Eve remains a time of celebration, reflection and renewed optimism. Families and friends come together to mark the occasion and for many, fireworks form part of the festivities. While this period is filled with excitement, it is also a time when responsible behaviour is essential to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community.
Fireworks: Celebrate Safely and Legally
Fireworks can add colour and joy to New Year celebrations, but they must be used responsibly and in accordance with local regulations/by-laws. (NYE from 11pm to 1am)
Adult supervision is always essential and fireworks should never be placed in the hands of children. By following these guidelines, we can reduce the risk of injury, property damage and unnecessary strain on emergency services.
Pet Safety: Protecting Our Four-Legged Family Members
For many pets, fireworks are not a celebration but a source of fear and distress. Loud noises can cause anxiety, panic and in some cases, pets may try to escape, placing themselves in danger.
Pet owners are encouraged to keep animals indoors during fireworks, ensure gates and fences are secure and provide a quiet, familiar space where pets feel safe.
Soft background music or television noise can help mask the sound of fireworks. Checking that pets are properly identified, with collars or microchips, is also strongly advised.
Responsible Driving: Arrive Alive
New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest and most high-risk periods on our roads. Celebrations often involve alcohol, fatigue and increased traffic, all of which significantly elevate the risk of accidents.
Responsible driving is non-negotiable.
If you plan to drink, make alternative transport arrangements such as a designated driver, lift service or E-hailing option. Obey speed limits, remain alert and be mindful of pedestrians and other road users.
A single decision can mean the difference between welcoming the New Year with joy or tragedy.
A Shared Responsibility
As a community, each of us plays a role in ensuring that New Year celebrations are safe, respectful and enjoyable for all.
By being mindful of how we celebrate—through safe fireworks use, protecting our pets and driving responsibly—we set a positive tone for the year ahead.
Let us welcome 2026 with care, consideration and a shared commitment to safety. Wishing everyone a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous New Year.
